Little Knights

New to the LC Football umbrella, the Little Knights Program is our internal flag football league for students in 1st and 2nd grades. It introduces our youngest Knights to the fundamentals of the game, helping them learn basic plays and develop a love for football within a safe, supportive, and fun environment.

League Goals:

  • Introduction to the sport of football in a safe and structured environment

  • Competitive play while encouraging teamwork and good sportsmanship

  • Have fun and instill a love for the game of football

  • The Lexington Catholic Little Knights Program is open to any child in a public, parochial or private school in first or second grade.

  • All practices and games are on Sundays: Practice at 1:00, Game at 2:00 (on the baseball field). During practice, all players will be instructed together on drills, concepts, terminology, and the basics of football.

  • Teams to be formed on Game Days following the pre-game practice.

    • Team formation will be constructed to ensure a competitive balance between the teams

    • Teams will likely change from week to week to maintain competitive balance, allow players to be instructed by different coaches, and provide players with the opportunity to play with various teammates.

    • Placement of QBs first to ensure every team has a capable QB

    • Placement of players by grade level to ensure no overloading of any particular grade for any given team

    • Each team will operate out of the same playbook based on high school terminology

      • Coaches will be allowed to add additional plays, but keeping the same terminology

  • Players to be separated into 4 even teams

    • The playing field will be a total of 70 yards with 50 yards being the playing field and the remaining being the end zones. Width 30 yds.

    • Two 20-minute running half’s, with the exception of:

      • Timeouts: 1 per team, per half

    • Game Format

      • Ball spotted on 5-yard line with 4-downs to cross midfield, followed by 3-downs to score

      • On 3rd down before midfield:

        • Punt: ball placed on opponent’s 5-yard line,

        • Attempt:  If unsuccessful opposing team assumes position at the spot of the ball

      • No run zones:

        • 5-yards and in to mid-field

        • 5-yards and in from the endzone

      • QB cannot run past the line of scrimmage and has 7 seconds to throw the ball. QB can handoff or pitch behind line of scrimmage and then receive throw past the line of scrimmage

      • Once the ball is handed off or pitched backwards behind the line of scrimmage, the 7 second rule goes away.

      • Unlimited handoffs and backward pitches are allowed behind the line of scrimmage, but no backwards passes/pitches/handoffs beyond the line of scrimmage

      • No offensive blocking

      • No defensive rushing prior to throw or handoff, once handed off or pitched backwards, defensive players are eligible to rush behind the line of scrimmage.

      • Interceptions can be returned for 6 points during a scrimmage down, or 2 points during an extra point

      • The ball is dead once it hits the ground, the offensive players flag is pulled, the ball carrier runs out of bounds or their body (outside of their hands/feet) touches the ground.

      • A fumbled ball is marked where it hits the ground

      • All offensive penalties result in loss of down and ball placed back at the line of scrimmage

      • All defensive penalties result in a first down at the spot of the foul

    • Scoring:

      • Touchdown: 6 points

      • Extra points:

        • 1 point: 5-yard line

        • 2 points: 10-yard line

    • Standard flag football rules to be called on field by referees

      • No challenges, officials’ rulings/calls are final

      • Head coach may ask official for clarification on rule/call

      • Assistant coaches cannot speak to the officials

        • First offense = warning

        • Second offense = off the sideline for the remainder of the game

  • Our coaches are all volunteers with varying levels of football experience. If you’re interested in getting involved, we’d love to hear from you—let us know if you’d like to help coach!
